There is virtually an infinite amount of reasons as to why learning chess is useful, but to sum it up in a few words we would say that chess is an imitation of life, providing us with a fantastic opportunity to exercise our brain.
In the information driven era one has to master his/her skills in grasping and digesting large amounts of information, comparing similar possibilities and choosing the best under time pressure. These cannot be obtained without practice and training, and chess is a perfect tool. The idea is simple: learning chess helps develop thinking skills.
